On November 21, 2023, during a 2026 World Cup qualifier against Brazil, Lionel Messi prompted Argentina to leave the pitch at the Maracanã. The reason: police violence against Argentine fans, who had come in large numbers to watch this South American clash.
“We’re not going to play, we’re leaving!” the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner declared after the national anthems, before the team headed back to the locker room. The match finally kicked off 30 minutes late, once the situation had calmed down. Argentina won 1-0, but Messi stood by his actions. “We did it because it was a way to calm things down a bit. We were more concerned about our loved ones than the match,” he said.
Sanctions against Argentina, Messi spared
FIFA had opened a disciplinary investigation against both federations, ultimately fining Argentina 20,000 Swiss francs (approximately €21,000) for the behavior of its fans. Messi and his teammates, however, were cleared for leaving the pitch before kickoff.
In the case of Senegal, the situation is different: the AFCON falls under the jurisdiction of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), which is the only body competent to decide on any disciplinary sanctions.
Two different contexts, one same symbolism
Although the reasons differ – police violence in Messi’s case, referee disputes for the Senegalese – the symbolism remains strong: that of players ready to interrupt a match to defend a cause they consider superior to the game.
