His behavior towards Senegalese referee Issa Sy after the Nigeria-Algeria match (2-0) sparked strong reactions. Rafik Belghali (23 years old) responded on the social network X.
The Algerian national team's right-back was seen visibly agitated, confronting the Senegalese referee after the match. Criticized for his actions, Belghali takes responsibility and denies any aggression towards Issa Sy.
"I saw the video circulating after the match and I understand how it can be perceived without knowing the full context. After the final whistle, I approached the referee to shake his hand. His reaction surprised me and, in the heat of the moment, I briefly followed him to ask why. There was no aggression or intention to confront him. However, I take responsibility for letting the situation escalate, in a moment of intense emotion after an exciting match," wrote the Hellas Verona footballer.
"I respect the referees and the game, and I am focused on my progress as a professional and on representing my club and my country with responsibility and discipline," added the Algerian full-back.
On Saturday, Algeria lost 2-0 to Nigeria. However, the Algerians strongly criticized the refereeing of Senegalese official Issa Sy, blaming him for several decisions, including a penalty he "missed" for a handball by Ajayi. After the match, angry scenes erupted between the Algerian players and the Senegalese refereeing team, continuing into the locker room. The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has taken up the matter.
