CAN Maroc 2025 : Basilio Ndong écope du premier carton du tournoi
The Africa Cup of Nations Morocco 2025 saw its first official expulsion on Wednesday. During the match between Equatorial Guinea and Burkina Faso, Equatorial Guinean defender Basilio Ndong became the first player to be sent off in this edition of the continental tournament.
The incident occurred in the 52nd minute of the game. Following a physical challenge, Basilio Ndong stepped on the ankle of Burkina Faso captain Bertrand Traoré. Initially, the referee issued only a yellow card, deeming the action unintentional. However, the intervention of the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) changed the situation.
After reviewing the footage, the refereeing team reclassified the action, deeming it dangerous and endangering the opponent's physical integrity. The initial yellow card was rescinded and replaced with a direct red card, resulting in immediate expulsion.
This sanction profoundly altered the balance of the match, forcing Equatorial Guinea to play with a numerical disadvantage against the Stallions, who won the match in the final seconds (2-1).
