CAN Maroc-2025 : Entrée gratuite, la CAF ouvre les portes des stades pour certains matchs
Faced with sometimes sparse crowds at kick-off, the Confederation of African Football (CAF), in agreement with the Moroccan organizing committee, has decided to adopt a significant measure for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations: free access to stadiums will be permitted approximately twenty minutes after the start of certain matches. This initiative aims to boost attendance and guarantee an atmosphere befitting the tournament's prestige.
This new policy has already shown its effects. On Wednesday evening, at the Grand Stadium in Agadir, which can hold 45,000 spectators, the match between Cameroon and Gabon began in a subdued atmosphere, with the stands largely empty during the warm-up. But as the first half progressed, despite persistent rain, the crowds swelled. By the end of the match, more than 35,000 fans had taken their seats in the stadium, according to observations reported by AFP.
The same scenario had played out a few days earlier, during Egypt's 2-1 victory against Zimbabwe in the same stadium. While only a few hundred people attended the national anthems, the crowd gradually swelled to nearly 28,200 spectators by the final whistle, even causing crowd management difficulties in some areas.
Other matches, such as DR Congo-Benin and Tunisia-Uganda, also benefited from this measure, which was widely praised and shared on social media under the slogan "The People's AFCON." This approach seems to appeal to fans and rekindle the passion in the stands.
For Morocco, the stakes go beyond mere attendance. The kingdom wants to make this AFCON 2025 a complete success, both organizationally and in terms of public participation, while also nurturing great sporting ambitions.
With the 2030 World Cup approaching, which it will co-host with Spain and Portugal, the country also hopes to make a strong impression and finally achieve a continental title that has been awaited for fifty years.
