CAN Maroc 2025 : un succès économique retentissant pour le Royaume
The 35th edition of the Africa Cup of Nations officially concluded on January 18, 2026, in Rabat, with Senegal emerging victorious after defeating Morocco 1-0 in extra time. A painful loss for the Atlas Lions in front of their home crowd, but one that in no way diminished the immense organizational and economic success of this 2025 AFCON.
Beyond the sporting result, Morocco can boast an extremely positive record, at a time when the country is already looking ahead to co-hosting the 2030 World Cup. Invited to speak on RFI, the Moroccan Minister of Industry and Trade, Ryad Mezzour, gave a glowing account of the economic benefits generated by the competition.
According to the minister, nearly one billion euros have been injected into the modernization of sports infrastructure: renovation and construction of stadiums, development of car parks and ancillary facilities.
“These investments have already paid for themselves,” assures Ryad Mezzour. “The benefits are visible through tourism, job creation, increased consumption, and the massive involvement of SMEs. In short, this is the most profitable AFCON in history, for the organizer, the CAF, and the host country alike.”
A dramatic acceleration of development
Beyond the sporting infrastructure, the Africa Cup of Nations served as a catalyst for vast structural projects. Morocco currently invests nearly 40 billion euros per year in its infrastructure: roads, energy, water security, and public transport.
Key projects include the acquisition of 128 new trains, the extension of the TGV line to Marrakech and then Agadir, as well as the development of airport platforms.
"Over the past two years, the AFCON has given us a nearly ten-year head start in infrastructure development," the minister said happily.
100,000 jobs created
Initial estimates indicate that nearly 100,000 jobs will be generated thanks to the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, particularly in construction, services, and new technologies. These skilled jobs, accompanied by training programs, will sustainably strengthen the local economy.
The competition also marked a technological turning point with 100% digital ticketing and the introduction of Fan ID. A first in Africa, this allowed for smooth management of spectator flow.
Result: more than 1.3 million fans attended the stadiums, a historic record, with an organization praised for its safety and efficiency.
A historic commercial success
For the president of the Confederation of African Football, Patrice Motsepe, the verdict is final:
"This is the most successful AFCON in the competition's history. The biggest commercial success in African football."
The figures confirm this enthusiasm: CAF revenues related to the 2025 AFCON have increased by more than 90%, reaching nearly 280 million euros.
Several factors explain this performance: the expansion of the sponsor portfolio, the increase in broadcasting rights, and the opening up to new markets, particularly in Asia (China, Japan). In terms of partnerships, a record has been set: 9 sponsors in Cameroon, 17 in Ivory Coast, and 23 in Morocco by 2025. A major tourism impact.
Already the leading tourist destination in Africa, Morocco reached a new milestone in 2025 with nearly 20 million visitors. The influx of foreign fans significantly boosted the hotel, restaurant, and local retail sectors.
Patrice Motsepe also praised the exceptional quality of the infrastructure: state-of-the-art stadiums, top-tier facilities, and services meeting international standards. To achieve this level of excellence, the Kingdom has invested heavily: nearly one billion euros dedicated solely to sports facilities. With these infrastructures already operational and profitable, Morocco estimates it has covered nearly 80% of its needs for hosting the 2030 World Cup. The 2025 Africa Cup of Nations will thus go down in history not only as a major celebration of African football, but also as a strategic lever for economic development and international appeal for the Kingdom of Morocco.
