Coupe de France : Lyon réagit au penalty manqué de Moussa Niakhaté
The French Cup quarter-final between Olympique Lyonnais and Racing Club de Lens felt like a final before the final. With Paris Saint-Germain and Olympique de Marseille no longer in contention, the path seemed clear for both clubs. But after an intense duel that ended in a 2-2 draw, it was ultimately Abdallah Sima's Lens side who secured their place in the semi-finals after a penalty shootout victory (5-4).
For Lyon, this elimination prolongs a difficult period. Having gone 13 matches unbeaten in all competitions, Moussa Niakhaté and his teammates saw their momentum halted at the end of February against Strasbourg (3-1 defeat). Another disappointment followed at the Vélodrome against Marseille, reigniting the race for a top-three finish in the league. Elimination from the Coupe de France is therefore yet another blow for Lyon.
The penalty shootout proved fatal for Lyon. Senegalese international defender Moussa Niakhaté saw his attempt saved by Lens goalkeeper Robin Risser, handing the victory to the Sang et Or (Blood and Gold). Despite this difficult moment, the 28-year-old immediately received support from his club.
Lyon's technical director, Matthieu Louis-Jean, didn't hesitate to defend his player after the match. He praised the center-back's overall performance, believing that this miss shouldn't call his season into question. "Moussa played a great match and is having a fantastic season. Penalty shootouts are always a lottery. Every player misses them sometimes," he explained.
Captain Corentin Tolisso also heaped praise on his teammate. According to him, the Senegalese African champion was one of the key players in the match, winning numerous duels and setting an example for the rest of the team. "He was incredible tonight. He's the one who guided the team and allowed us to get back into the game. We're not going to judge a player based on a missed penalty," the French international insisted.
Even in the opposing camp, the Senegalese defender elicited sympathy. Lens coach Pierre Sage admitted to thinking of him after the match. "I'm obviously happy about the qualification, but I'm very sad for Moussa, knowing the player and the man he is," he said.
Despite this difficult period, Moussa Niakhaté can count on the confidence of his club and teammates. Having had a solid season with Lyon, the Lions defender will need to quickly put this behind him to help his team get back on track in the race for a top-three finish in the league.
