Coupe du monde 2026 : Curaçao, Fred Rutten quitte son poste de sélectionneur sous la pression des joueurs
With the 2026 World Cup just a month away, the Curaçao national team is going through a turbulent period. Fred Rutten, who arrived last February to succeed Dick Advocaat, has decided to resign as head coach, as announced this Monday by the Curaçao Football Federation.
The Dutch coach, appointed after Advocaat withdrew to stay with his sick daughter, explained his choice in a statement published by the FFK.
"There must not be a climate that could damage professional relationships within the group or staff. Under these conditions, resigning was the best decision. Time is of the essence and Curaçao must move forward," said Rutten, while nevertheless regretting the turn of events.
According to the Dutch media outlet De Telegraaf, Dick Advocaat could make an unexpected return as head coach of the national team for the 2026 World Cup. His daughter's health has reportedly improved, and several players have called for his return.
At 78 years old, the Dutch coach could thus participate in a third World Cup as manager, after the 1994 edition with the Netherlands and the 2006 edition with South Korea.
For its first ever participation in the World Cup, Curaçao will be drawn into a particularly tough group with Germany, Ivory Coast and Ecuador in Group E.
