Coupe du monde 2026 : Ferdinand Coly prend position pour Malang Sarr
The debate surrounding Malang Sarr's potential inclusion in the Senegalese national team for the 2026 World Cup continues to fuel discussions. Between convincing performances at club level and criticism related to his international past, Ferdinand Coly has made a clear decision in favor of the defender, believing that only current form should be a factor in the Lions' selection.
Two days before Pape Thiaw announces his squad, the debate surrounding Malang Sarr's potential inclusion in Senegal's 2026 World Cup squad continues to fuel discussions. Initially called up by Thiaw, the RC Lens defender is awaiting final confirmation for the tournament scheduled to take place in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
Despite his convincing performances this season, the player still faces some criticism related to his past national team choices. Ferdinand Coly considers this situation completely unjustified.
In an interview with L'Observateur, the former captain of the Lions gave clear support to Malang Sarr, believing that the debate should focus solely on his sporting qualities and his current form.
“Today, I am surprised to hear some people say that Malang Sarr should not come to the national team. At one point in his career, he made choices that did not turn out as planned. But since then, he has matured enormously,” explained Ferdinand Coly.
The former Senegalese defender also praised the player's progress this season, highlighting his experience and defensive solidity.
According to him, the Lens defender possesses all the necessary qualities to make a real difference to the Lions. "He had a very good season. His performances show that he has gained experience and confidence. He is a player capable of contributing a lot to the national team," he added.
Ferdinand Coly believes that the controversy surrounding the former Chelsea player is now unfounded. In his view, Malang Sarr remains fully entitled to wear the Senegalese jersey.
"He's Senegalese, he meets the criteria and he performed well this year. His presence on this list doesn't surprise me at all. I'm happy for him and for the season he's just had," concluded the former Lion.
