Coupe du monde 2026 : L’Argentine renverse l’Égypte dans un match spectaculaire
Argentina will indeed be in the quarter-finals of the 2026 World Cup. Trailing 2-0, the reigning world champions managed to overturn a solid Egyptian team in a spectacular match, winning by a score of 3-2.
Without any hesitation, the Egyptians quickly took the lead. Moving upfield, Yasser Ibrahim opened the scoring with a header from an excellent cross by Mohamed Atteya (15th minute, 1-0).
Spurred into action, Argentina reacted immediately. Played through on goal, Nicolás Tagliafico won a penalty after a foul by an Egyptian defender. Lionel Messi, tasked with taking it, saw his attempt saved by Egyptian goalkeeper Mostafa Shoubeir (21st minute). The Argentine captain was then unlucky again, hitting the post with a superb free kick ten minutes later (31st minute).
Solid defensively, Mohamed Salah's teammates resisted the Argentinian attacks and maintained their lead until halftime.
After returning from the locker room, Argentina intensified the pressure, but it was Egypt who looked the more dangerous side. Mostafa Ziko even thought he had doubled their lead with a superb goal. However, after a VAR review, the goal was disallowed for a prior foul on an Argentine player (59th minute).
The Pharaohs, however, didn't take long to extend their lead. Taking advantage of a perfectly executed counter-attack led by Mohamed Salah, Egypt scored a second goal in the 67th minute to take a 2-0 lead.
The Egyptians thought they had done the hard part. But they hadn't counted on the determination of Lionel Messi's teammates. In the 79th minute, Cristian Romero sparked the Argentine comeback by heading home a precise cross from Lionel Messi.
Five minutes later, the Albiceleste captain took advantage of a poor clearance from the Egyptian defence to equalise (84th), triggering enthusiasm from the many Argentinian supporters present in the stands.
Completely stunned by this spectacular comeback, Egypt finally succumbed in added time. On a counter-attack, Lautaro Martínez broke down the right flank before delivering a perfect cross to Enzo Fernández, who headed past Shoubeir from close range (90+4').
Thanks to this dramatic turnaround, Argentina beat Egypt 3-2 and secured their place in the quarter-finals.
