Coupe du monde 2026 : le geste de classe de Lionel Messi envers Miroslav Klose
By scoring his 21st World Cup goal at the 2026 edition, Lionel Messi became the competition's all-time leading scorer. The Argentinian striker thus surpassed German legend Miroslav Klose, who scored 16 goals in the final stages of the World Cup during this tournament.
Far from any rivalry, the Albiceleste captain was keen to show his respect for his prestigious predecessor. Through the intermediary of Argentine national team coach Lionel Scaloni, a former teammate of Klose at Lazio, the two men had a long telephone conversation.
The former German striker recounted this exchange with emotion. "Lionel Scaloni and I have stayed in touch since our time at Lazio. He's the one who arranged this call between Lionel Messi and me. We had already crossed paths on the pitch, always respectfully, but it was the first time we took so much time to talk. He even promised to send me a signed jersey," Miroslav Klose revealed during a program organized by FC Nuremberg.
This gesture of fair play illustrates once again the class of Lionel Messi, who wanted to salute the man whose historic record he has just broken.
Despite this exceptional performance, the Argentinian's record could one day be threatened. Frenchman Kylian Mbappé, who has already scored 19 World Cup goals, remains a worthy challenger and could, in the future, approach this historic mark.
