Coupe du monde 2026 : L’Espagne établit un record défensif historique
Spain's journey at the 2026 World Cup continues to make history. Having qualified for the quarter-finals after their narrow victory against Portugal (1-0) in the round of 16, La Roja also achieved an unprecedented record thanks to the solidity of their defense.
By winning this Iberian derby, the Spanish extended their defensive invincibility run to 618 minutes without conceding a single goal, a new absolute record in the history of the World Cup.
An exceptional performance that testifies to the rigor and organization of the Spanish team over several editions of the tournament.
With this streak, Spain surpasses the previous record holders. Switzerland, which had gone 557 minutes without conceding a goal in the World Cup, is now relegated to second place. Italy completes the podium with a streak of 550 minutes.
To find the last time Spain conceded a goal in the competition, you have to go back to December 1, 2022, during the group stage of the World Cup in Qatar. On that day, Japan won 2-1 thanks in particular to a goal from Ao Tanaka in the 51st minute.
Since then, the Spanish have played six consecutive matches without seeing their goalkeeper beaten.
This defensive solidity is one of the main assets of the Spanish team in its quest for a second world title, after the one won in 2010 in South Africa.
Now in the quarter-finals, La Roja will try to extend this impressive run while continuing their journey towards the world title.
