With the 2026 World Cup kicking off in just days, predictions are flying. Belgian striker of Congolese descent, Romelu Lukaku, was asked about Senegal's chances in the World Cup. The Napoli striker expressed his admiration for the Lions of Teranga, whom he considers one of the teams capable of causing a sensation at the tournament being held in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
Belgium's all-time leading scorer was particularly enthusiastic when discussing the Senegalese national team managed by Pape Thiaw. Asked about the chances of African representatives, the Napoli striker was full of praise for Senegal.
"Senegal has won the AFCON twice and I am convinced they will have an incredible World Cup," said the former Chelsea, Manchester United and Inter Milan player.
These comments illustrate the respect that Senegal enjoys today on the international stage. Since its historic run in 2002, its continental title in 2022 and its regular performances at the highest African level, the Senegalese national team has established itself as one of the continent's benchmarks.
For its fourth participation in a World Cup, after the 2002, 2018 and 2022 editions, Senegal aims to reach a new milestone and leave a lasting mark on this 2026 edition.
Lukaku's statement, however, contains a detail that is sure to provoke reactions. By asserting that Senegal has won two Africa Cup of Nations titles, the Belgian international seems to consider the Lions of Teranga as the true winners of the 2025 AFCON.
As a reminder, the CAF administratively annulled the title won by Senegal against Morocco in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations final, before awarding the trophy to the Atlas Lions. This decision was contested by the Senegalese Football Federation, which took the case to the Court of Arbitration for Sport. The case is still under review and no final verdict has yet been reached.
