Coupe du monde 2026 : Portugal Roberto Martinez s’en va
Roberto Martinez's adventure as manager of the Portuguese national team came to an end on Monday. Eliminated in the round of 16 of the 2026 World Cup by Spain (1-0), Portugal sees its manager turn the page after three and a half years at the helm of the Seleção.
Moments after the final whistle, the Spanish coach officially announced his departure at the post-match press conference. Despite the disappointment of this elimination, he was keen to defend the work he had accomplished since taking over the job.
“We achieved the best statistical results in the history of the Seleção and won the Nations League. We were eliminated by one of the tournament favorites after putting up a good fight. I hope the fans will remember that we gave everything during these three and a half years. This was my last match with Portugal. I thank the Portuguese people and all the players,” said Roberto Martinez.
Appointed as Portugal's manager after the 2022 World Cup, the former Belgium coach led the Portuguese national team to victory in the Nations League and several other impressive campaigns. However, his tenure ended with a disappointing result at the 2026 World Cup against neighboring Spain.
The Portuguese Football Federation must now focus on finding a new national team coach to prepare for upcoming international matches and to begin a new chapter for a team still largely led by its veterans. According to the latest reports, Jorge Jesus is the chosen coach to replace the Spaniard.
