Décision de la CAF : George Weah prend la défense du Sénégal
Former Ballon d'Or winner and three-time African Footballer of the Year, George Manneh Weah has issued a statement condemning the Confederation of African Football's (CAF) decision to withdraw the hosting of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (CAN) from Senegal in favour of Morocco.
On Facebook this Thursday, March 18, the former football star stressed that "in football, the laws of the game are clear: the referee on the field is the final authority on the decisions made during the match. Once the game is allowed to continue and the match is over, the result obtained on the field must stand."
He stated that CAF regulations are in line with FIFA's Laws of the Game, which stipulate that "the referee has full authority to enforce the Laws of the Game in relation to the match to which he has been appointed, and his decisions on matters relating to the game are final."
Regarding the last Africa Cup of Nations match between Senegal and Morocco, Weah clarified that the referee allowed play to continue despite the Senegalese team's temporary departure from the field, and that the match was completed, including extra time. According to him, the referee's report only noted a work stoppage, without finding a forfeit, and recommended appropriate sanctions for the infractions committed.
"The subsequent decision of the CAF committee, taken after the final whistle, should not override the authority exercised by the referee during the match. Football must be decided on the pitch, not after the match," he said.
George Weah denounced a decision which he said "undermines confidence in the fairness, consistency and integrity of African football" and called on the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) and other relevant authorities to intervene quickly.
He also took the opportunity to deny rumors circulating on social media that he supported the CAF's decision against Senegal. "These claims are clearly false," he asserted.
