Équipe nationale d’Italie : Gianluigi Buffon prend la porte
Heads continue to roll at the top of football after the Squadra Azzurra's elimination. Following the crushing failure to qualify for the World Cup, the consequences continue to mount at the highest levels of the national team. After the resignation of federation president Gabriele Gravina, it is now Gianluigi Buffon who has decided to step down.
The former iconic goalkeeper of the Nazionale announced this Thursday his departure from his position as head of delegation, a role he had held since 2023. A strong decision, taken in a context of profound questioning after another major failure for Italian football.
In an emotional message posted on his social media, Gianluigi Buffon explained that he wanted to resign immediately after the match against Bosnia, which ended in a 1-1 draw before being eliminated on penalties. He described it as a decision dictated by the heart, torn between personal pain and collective responsibility.
The former goalkeeper also emphasized that he had agreed to postpone his departure to allow time for a comprehensive review within the Federation. However, following Gabriele Gravina's exit, he believes it is now his duty to step down as well.
Despite his commitment and efforts to strengthen team cohesion, particularly alongside Gennaro Gattuso and the technical staff, Gianluigi Buffon acknowledges that the main objective has not been achieved: to bring Italy back to the World Cup.
Out of a sense of responsibility, he prefers to make way for a new management team, which will have full latitude to rebuild and relaunch the Italian national team after this latest disappointment.
