Espérance Tunis - Al Ahly : Issa Sy siffle la fin et sort son carton rouge pour menacer les joueurs (vidéo)
Senegalese referee Issa Sy officiated the first leg of the African Champions League quarter-final between Espérance de Tunis and Al Ahly. The match ended in a 1-0 victory for the Tunisians thanks to a penalty in the 73rd minute, but the most striking image was the Senegalese referee's gesture immediately after the final whistle.
It's a rare sight. To discourage Al Ahly players and staff from protesting in front of him, Issa Sy found a clever solution. As soon as the final whistle blew, the Senegalese coach pulled out his red card, his face grim, as if he were waiting for someone to approach him so he could send him off. A successful strategy, since no one did.
The Senegalese referee has certainly learned lessons from his last outing at the 2025 AFCON, when he was cornered and pushed around by Algerian players after their 2-0 defeat against Nigeria in the quarter-final.
