FIFA : l'Afrique et l'Asie font bloc derrière Gianni Infantino pour un nouveau mandat
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) and the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) announced on Thursday their official support for the re-election of Gianni Infantino, whose current term as head of the International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) will end in 2027. Meeting in Vancouver on the eve of the 76th FIFA Congress, the CAF member associations unanimously decided to put forward the candidacy of the Italian-Swiss for the period 2027-2031.
Asia immediately followed Africa's lead. AFC President Sheikh Salman bin Ebrahim Al Khalifa declared that Asian football would continue to offer its full support to Infantino, emphasizing that the world governing body is now in a stronger position than ever. First elected in 2016, Gianni Infantino, 56, is not yet officially a candidate, but these massive endorsements, along with that of the South American Football Confederation (CONMEBOL), already point to his almost certain re-election.
Although FIFA statutes limit the presidency to three terms, the 2023 Congress in Kigali ruled that Infantino's first term, which began after Sepp Blatter's downfall, was "incomplete." This legal interpretation allows him to legally run for what is considered his third full term starting in 2027. The location and date of the next elective congress are expected to be finalized at the assembly being held this Thursday in Vancouver.
Despite numerous controversies, including criticism from the FairSquare association regarding his ties to Donald Trump and the contested expansion of the World Cup to 48 teams starting with the 2026 edition, Gianni Infantino boasts a solid financial record. Under his leadership, FIFA's revenues have skyrocketed, reaching $13 billion at the end of the current cycle. For the 2027-2030 period, the international federation has committed to distributing approximately $2.7 billion to its members through the FIFA Forward program, eight times more than a decade ago—a compelling argument for securing the loyalty of the confederations.
