« Finale » RD Congo - Sénégal : 3 bonnes raisons de croire en une victoire des Lions
This Tuesday at 4 p.m., Senegal and DR Congo will meet in the Group B "final" of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers. After this clash, each team will have two matches remaining, but the winner will have a good chance of qualifying directly for the World Cup. Here are three good reasons to believe the Lions of Teranga will win against the Leopards.
Senegal, the black beast of the DR Congo
56 years! It's been 56 years since the DR Congo last beat Senegal. The last time was in a friendly match, won by the Leopards with a resounding 4-0 victory one evening in January 1969. Since then, the Congolese have been unable to find a solution against the Senegalese. After that famous 4-0, the two teams met 9 times, with 3 draws and 6 Senegalese victories. Before the 1-1 draw at the Abdoulaye Wade Stadium last year, Senegal was on a 4-game winning streak.
The longest unbeaten streak in the world right now
Currently, in the world of football, no team is in better form than Senegal. Pape Thiaw's players are on a run of 23 matches without a single defeat*. The last defeat dates back to September 2023, in a friendly match against Algeria. For the past two years, therefore, no team has managed to bring down the Lions. Better still, Senegal is aiming to challenge the African record, held by South Africa with 35 matches without defeat.
*Senegal lost on penalties to Ivory Coast in January 2024, but statistically, a match beyond extra time is considered a draw.
DR Congo, not impregnable at home
Despite having made significant progress in recent years, DR Congo is not, however, an impregnable fortress at home. In recent years, teams with modest squads have managed to pocket all three points at the Stade des Martyrs in Kinshasa. The most recent was Ethiopia, less than a year ago. Finishing last in their qualifying group for the 2025 African Cup of Nations, Ethiopia managed to win 2-1 at the group leaders' home ground in Kinshasa. The circumstances will not be the same, but the Lions of Teranga are hoping for the same outcome.
In addition, Senegal is ahead of DR Congo in terms of experience. The Lions of Teranga are familiar with these kinds of matches that count double. They faced Ecuador in the 2022 World Cup group stage, Egypt in the 2021 CAN playoff and final, and recently Burkina Faso in Ouagadougou, in the 2023 CAN qualifiers. However, in qualifying, the Leopards faltered in their last "final." They lost 5-2 on aggregate against Morocco in the 2022 World Cup playoff.

- Physiquement, tout le monde doit être prêt pour nos replis et nos contre-attaques;
Bonne Chance qd mm
