Foot: Chelsea privé de Coupe d'Europe, Bournemouth et Sunderland en Ligue Europa
Chelsea, tenth in the Premier League, will not play in European competition next season, unlike Bournemouth and Sunderland, who qualified for the Europa League after the final day of the championship.
Eighth before the weekend, a place which qualified them for the Conference League, the Blues dropped two places after their 2-1 defeat on Sunderland's pitch, playing with ten men against eleven.
French defender Wesley Fofana was sent off for a second yellow card (62nd minute) and his compatriot Malo Gusto scored an own goal (50th minute, 2-0).
Their future coach, Xabi Alonso, will therefore only have the Premier League and national cups as a playing field.
This is a rather brutal demotion for the wealthy west London club, winner of the Conference League and the Club World Cup in 2025, and who played in the Champions League this season.
Conversely, newly promoted Sunderland and their French coach Régis Le Bris finished in a splendid seventh place, which meant Europa League qualification.
Relegated in 2017 to the Championship (2nd division), then to League One (3rd division) the following year, the Black Cats have only experienced Europe once and briefly, until the second round of the Cup Winners' Cup during the 1973-1974 season.
Bournemouth consolidated their sixth place, which also qualifies them for the Europa League, by recording their 18th consecutive league match without defeat on Sunday at Nottingham Forest (1-1).
The team in which Junior Kroupi and Adrien Truffert play was promoted to the Premier League in 2022.
Brighton, heavily beaten by Manchester United (3-0), take eighth place and will therefore play in the Conference League next season.
