José Emilio Santamaria, figure du Real Madrid
The Spanish-Uruguayan José Emilio Santamaria, winner of four European Cups with Real Madrid in the 1950s and 1960s, and coach of Spain at the 1982 World Cup, has died at the age of 96, the Merengue club announced on Wednesday.
"We will always remember Santamaria as one of the great symbols of our club," said President Florentino Perez.
"Alongside Di Stefano, Puskas, Gento or Kopa," the Montevideo-born defender played in the team that "began to build the myth of Real Madrid," the executive continued.
From 1957 to 1966 with Real Madrid, Santamaria won four European Cups (1958, 1959, 1960, 1966), one Intercontinental Cup, six Spanish Championships and one Spanish Cup.
He has 25 caps for Uruguay, and 16 for Spain which he joined after his naturalization, for two participations in a World Cup, in 1954 (with Uruguay) and in 1962 (with Spain).
He coached Espanyol Barcelona for seven seasons starting in 1971 and led the Spanish national team at the 1982 World Cup, which was held in Spain. La Roja were eliminated in the second round.
