Football africain : Le coup de gueule salutaire d’Edouard Mendy face aux lacunes des instances
On the eve of a friendly match against Gambia, the Lions of Teranga's last line of defense, Edouard Mendy, traded his gloves for a frank analysis. In a press conference, the Senegalese goalkeeper offered a clear-eyed and harsh assessment of the growing gap between the excellence of the players on the pitch and the administrative management of continental football.
Global talent held back by fragile structures
For Edouard Mendy, the contrast is striking: while African players dominate the biggest European and global leagues, the institutions struggle to keep pace. He proudly points out that "in all the best clubs in the world, African players win trophies and proudly represent our continent." However, this glorious showcase is, in his view, tarnished by flawed internal management: "a handful of people continue to undermine this work."
The Senegalese goalkeeper points to a lack of credibility that prevents African competitions from reaching the prestige of their international counterparts. He believes that African football cannot yet claim the "respect that the Euros or the Copa América command," directly blaming the governing bodies, which "are not strong enough to place our competitions at the level they deserve."
Time for self-criticism and the neglect of women's football
Far from simply offering the usual complaints about arbitration or logistical organization, Mendy calls for a profound self-examination of the federal and confederal bodies. He expresses astonishment at the persistence of "situations that would be unthinkable in other confederations" and urges leaders to conduct a rigorous structural analysis to overcome their amateurish decision-making.
Finally, the African champion felt compelled to address a glaring injustice: the treatment of women's football. Referring to the cancellation of competitions without official justification, he lamented a general indifference. "A women's competition was cancelled for no reason, and I don't get the impression that this shocked many people," he remarked. For Edouard Mendy, the seriousness and recognition of African football absolutely depend on equal consideration for all its players, men and women alike.
