Gianni Infantino officialise sa candidature à sa réélection à la tête de la FIFA

FIFA President since 2016, Gianni Infantino announced that he was running for a new four-year term, this Thursday in Vancouver (Canada) during the 78th congress of the world football governing body.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino, who has led the organization for ten years, announced in Vancouver on Thursday that he would be a candidate for re-election in 2027. Elected in 2016, re-elected in 2019 and then in 2023, the 56-year-old Italian-Swiss took advantage of the FIFA congress to "confirm," he said, that he would indeed be a candidate, while some federations have already given him their support.

According to FIFA statutes, the head of the organization cannot serve more than three terms. However, it was officially considered at the elective congress held in 2023 in Kigali, Rwanda, that he was beginning his second term; his first, which began in 2016 after the downfall of his predecessor Sepp Blatter due to corruption charges, was deemed "incomplete" and therefore did not count towards the limit.

CAF and AFC support his re-election

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) and the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) announced on Thursday their support for his re-election, giving him a total of 101 votes out of 211. Infantino already had the 10 votes from South America (each national member federation, regardless of its size, has one vote at FIFA).

At the helm of world football since 2016, Infantino has faced numerous controversies, particularly in recent months due to his close ties with US President Donald Trump, to whom he awarded the inaugural FIFA Peace Prize. The awarding of this prize in December 2025 prompted the FairSquare association to file a complaint with FIFA's Ethics Committee.

Et ce sont les africains éternels derniers de la classe qui vont aller le soutenir tout juste parce qu’il a permis d’avoir 9 places au Mondial. On arrête pas le progrés, certes il l’a fait, certes on lui est reconnaissant mais et alors? Il faut degager ce genre de figure paternaliste qui a montré son vrai visage lors de la finale de la CAN.
