Guinée-Bissau : Le parquet anticorruption vise deux dirigeants de la fédération de football
Two key figures in the Guinea-Bissau Football Federation (FFGB) are now under investigation by the Attorney General's office for their alleged involvement in a case of embezzlement of public funds estimated at 183 million CFA francs. The press release published on May 15, 2026, does not name names, but according to the newspaper "O Démocrate," they are President Carlos Mendes Teixeira, known as "Caíto," and Vice-President Celestino Gonçalves, known as "Tinex." Both were questioned this week by the anti-corruption unit of the Bissau prosecutor's office.
Mendes Teixeira is subject to a travel ban and must pay bail of 82,800,000 CFA francs within ten days of notification. As for Gonçalves, he is placed under judicial supervision with restrictions on his identity and residence.
The sum in question was allegedly allocated by the Guinea-Bissau government to charter a plane to transport the São Tomé and Príncipe national team to a 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying match held in Ivory Coast. The match was played in Bissau, as the São Tomé and Príncipe national stadium was banned by CAF.
Initially closed without further action due to lack of evidence, the case was reopened last March thanks to new information provided by the Guinea-Bissau police in collaboration with Interpol.
In this case, known as "the chartering of a plane for the transport of the national team of Sao Tome and Principe", the former president of the Guinea-Bissau League of football clubs, Dembo Sissé, is also mentioned.
