Idrissa Gana Gueye : « On a gagné, mais le plus dur arrive »
A solid winner in their opening match, Senegal made a perfect start to their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations campaign. In the mixed zone, Idrissa Gana Gueye welcomed this first success while calling on his teammates to be more efficient and focused before the highly anticipated clash against the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
“I’m very happy with this victory. We had a lot of chances and we could have been more clinical, but the main thing was to win,” said the Senegalese midfielder. His satisfaction was tempered, however, as the veteran of the national team knows that the level of competition is about to rise even further.
Already focused on the next match, Gana Gueye sets the tone: "The next match will be very important. We will face the DRC, a great African team that will be looking for revenge. For our part, we want to confirm our status. It will be a decisive match."
A victory in this match would allow the Lions of Teranga to secure their place in the round of 16 as early as the second matchday. "If we win, it will guarantee our qualification and then give the coach the opportunity to manage the squad for the third match," he explains pragmatically.
When asked about the rest of the tournament and potential changes of venue, the Everton midfielder remained focused on the collective mission: "Whether we stay in Tangier or change venues, our objective is clear: to qualify. We must be ready for all situations and do the job on the pitch."
Finally, true to his convictions, Idrissa Gana Gueye concluded with his characteristic humility: "I am simply making the necessary efforts and I ask God for the health to continue defending the colors of my country. Victory belongs to the Lord."
