Initiation au Muay Thai : Un semaine de formation intensive pour la promotion de la discipline au Sénégal
To promote Muay Thai, an ancestral Thai martial art, also known as "Thai boxing", a training course was jointly organized by the Royal Thai Embassy in Dakar and the Senegalese Muay Thai Association.
From September 22 to 27, 2025, nearly 300 participants took part in a series of intensive workshops spread across several iconic clubs in Dakar, including the Samba Diery Diallo Gendarmerie Sports Club, the Dalifort Club, the Dakar Fit Boxing Club, the Mantis Club, the Jambaar Mermoz Club and the University of Dakar Muay Thai Club.
The event concluded yesterday with an official ceremony marked by the presentation of participation certificates and donations of equipment to Senegalese clubs.
His Excellency Rutch Soratana, Ambassador of the Kingdom of Thailand to Senegal, who chaired the event, emphasized the importance of this discipline in Thai culture. "Muay Thai is much more than a sport; it embodies discipline, respect, and resilience. By promoting this martial art in Senegal, we are sharing a rich cultural heritage and building lasting bridges between our two peoples," the diplomat said.
This training is part of a collaborative effort initiated in 2021 between the embassy and the Senegalese Muay Thai Association. Following an initial course organized in 2022, this new project has diversified activities. Workshops for children, women, and the general public, specialized sessions for experienced athletes, and train-the-trainer programs for coaches have been organized.
Papa Abdou Karim Diop, Secretary General of the Senegalese Muay Thai Association, welcomed the success of this edition. "The project brought together nearly 300 participants in formats adapted to all levels. This intensive training marks an important step in our desire to structure and professionalize the practice of Muay Thai in Senegal," he emphasized.
The Thai embassy hopes to continue this momentum through other cultural and sporting cooperation projects to promote the discipline in Senegal.
