«J’ai répliqué : ‘Merde’» : le cuisinier des Lions raconte le scandale
On the second day of the Lions' arrival in New Jersey, their base camp for the World Cup, "Chef Diallo" met with the woman who accused him of sexual harassment. He spoke to L'Observateur about the incident, revealing the circumstances under which she found herself in "his" kitchen. We reproduce the main points of his account.
“She [Maya Fall, provided by FIFA to assist the Senegalese and Ivorian national teams during the World Cup, according to the Lions’ cook] introduced me to a woman to help me in the kitchen. I agreed, specifying that it was up to the Federation to negotiate her daily wage. I then went to the kitchen to prepare the snack for the players who were about to leave for the stadium. There were more than twenty people there, including the woman, a Costa Rican woman of about 40, whom Maya had just suggested as an assistant.”
“After handing the snack trays to the doctor, I went back to the kitchen to change before returning to my room to pray. Before leaving, I shook hands with the Chinese colleague to thank her for her help. As for the woman Maya suggested, I gave her a friendly pat on the back before going to pray. When I returned an hour later, Maya confronted me, saying, ‘The service provider claims you patted her on the back and calls it sexual harassment.’ To which I vehemently replied to Maya, ‘Damn it . ’”
“ [Regarding her accuser] I only saw her for barely thirty minutes before she left. It was clearly a premeditated act. […] Her presence in the kitchen didn't exceed thirty minutes, just enough time for her to carry out her plan. It was an order from Maya. [The girl] is originally from Costa Rica, but she has American citizenship. Nobody knew her. Even the head chef told me it was the first time he'd ever seen her. She's part of the lobby that wanted to eliminate Senegal.”
" For me, Maya is behind all this, because the girl didn't make any accusations against me. I didn't see her again because afterwards I went back to the kitchen to prepare dinner. And before I finished preparing dinner, Maya came to tell me that I had a ticket to return to Senegal."
“ [Answering the question of whether he might have had malicious intent toward his accuser ] No, no. You know, it gets very hot in the kitchen. A good chef has to know how to manage his staff, especially when you're abroad and have hired local staff. After work, you have to greet everyone and congratulate them, whether the service was good or not. You have to know how to rally your team to move forward. You have to know how to manage them, to handle them so they don't sabotage your work. I greeted those who helped me to thank them, and as I turned away, I gave the Costa Rican woman a friendly pat on the back. Then, I went back to my room. There were about 15 people in the kitchen at that time. There was a Chinese man, two dishwashers, two people preparing pasta, and four women helping me with the salads.”
" [Regarding a marriage promise he allegedly made to his accuser] Never, ever."
