Jeux africains de la jeunesse : ministère des Sports-CNOSS, le grand déballage
Senegal's participation in the African Youth Games (AYG) in Luanda (December 10–20, 2025) is at the heart of a heated controversy between the Ministry of Sports and the Senegalese National Olympic and Sports Committee (CNOSS).
The ministry denounces an administrative "sabotage"
In an interview with L'Observateur, the Director of High-Level Sport, Cheikh Tahirou Fall, rejects all responsibility and accuses the CNOSS (National Olympic and Sports Committee of Senegal) of a lack of coordination, unreachability, and delays in transmitting the information necessary for the delegations' travel. He affirms that Senegal will indeed participate in the Games and indicates that the ministry had to contact the federations directly to organize departures, as several disciplines had already begun their competitions.
According to a source speaking to the newspaper of the Future Media Group, the CNOSS (National Olympic and Sports Committee of Senegal) provided the technical data late and only partially, complicating the preparation of the participation form. He maintains that all logistical, administrative, and financial arrangements were made by the ministry, despite the lack of initial budgetary approval for these Games.
The CNOSS's scathing reply
In response to these accusations, the Secretary General of the CNOSS, Seydina Diagne, questioned by the same source, formally denies being unreachable and places the responsibility on the Ministry. He points out that he contacted the department in April 2025 without receiving a response until November. He believes that the Ministry's late summons (the day before the start of the competitions) made it impossible to send the athletes in conditions that met the standards of the Olympic movement. He insists that, according to the Olympic Charter, only the CNOSS can officially register athletes for this type of event.
In a statement seen by L'Observateur, the Ministry of Youth and Sports finally shifted the debate to the realm of governance: "This attitude of the CNOSS comes as the mandate of President Diagna Ndiaye is expiring."
Khady Diène Gaye, the supervising minister, is now demanding a renewal of the bodies at the end of December 2025.
Despite this unfavorable climate, the ministry assures that Senegalese participation is maintained, with staggered departures starting this Friday, December 12, according to the schedule of events.
