A preparatory meeting for the arrival of the Olympic flame for the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games was held, bringing together Alsény Bangoura, Deputy Governor of Ziguinchor in charge of development (appointed Prefect of the Goudiry Department). The meeting focused on discussing the logistics of the Olympic flame's passage through the southern region, including the selection of historical and cultural sites.

The presence of administrative and territorial authorities, heads of departments and a delegation from the Dakar-2026 Youth Olympic Games Organising Committee was noted.

In his address, Mr. Bangoura emphasized the need for institutional and operational coordination. He reiterated the importance of adhering to international standards and developing a roadmap for each community.

"We must do everything to ensure that the Ziguinchor stage is an exemplary moment, up to Olympic standards," he stated.

The flame, a symbol of peace and brotherhood

The work focused on identifying sites, caravan routes, and security arrangements. Decentralized state services, local authorities, and defense and security forces are mobilized to ensure the event's success. The meeting of the regional development committee facilitated a collaborative approach with all local stakeholders.

For her part, Marie Ba, in charge of relations with cities at the organizing committee, highlighted the symbolic significance of the Olympic tour. "A symbol of peace, unity and fraternity, the flame will bring young people closer to the local populations and highlight the unique potential of each region," she declared.

Beyond this regional stage, the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games aspire to become a national sporting event. Casamance, a cultural crossroads and symbol of diversity, intends to play its full role in this dynamic.
