Coupe du monde 2026 : la FIFA durcit le règlement après les incidents de la finale de la CAN 2025
With the 2026 World Cup approaching, FIFA is tightening its regulations to prevent any extreme disputes, following the chaos seen during the 2025 AFCON final.
With less than two months to go before the start of the 2026 World Cup, FIFA has decided to tighten its grip. Marked by the incidents that occurred during the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations final, the world governing body has adopted new measures to prevent any recurrence of such unrest.
On January 18th in Rabat, the Senegalese players' walkout during a match, followed by scenes of confusion, left its mark. In response, FIFA had strict amendments adopted by the International Football Association Board (IFAB), which will come into effect at the World Cup scheduled from June 11th to July 19th in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
From now on, any player who deliberately leaves the pitch in protest can be shown a red card. The measure also applies to members of staff who encourage such behavior.
"At the discretion of the competition organizer, the referee may expel any player leaving the field to contest an umpire's decision. This rule also applies to any official inciting players to act in this way," the statement specifies.
During this controversial final, Senegal's coach, Pape Thiaw, called on his players to leave the pitch after a penalty was awarded to Morocco and a goal was disallowed for the Lions. This incident caused chaos before the players eventually returned to the field.
Another major change: any team responsible for the definitive abandonment of a match will be declared the loser by forfeit. "Any team that causes the interruption of a match will, in principle, be penalized with a forfeit loss," FIFA insists.
These new measures aim to establish a zero-tolerance policy towards extreme protests. Following the events of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, several teams replicated this type of protest, prompting the governing body to act swiftly to preserve the integrity of international competitions.
