Over the past 24 years, Senegal has participated in three World Cups. Their first matches are highly anticipated. The Lions have twice managed a strong start to the competition.
In 2002, under the guidance of Bruno Metsu, the Lions achieved a memorable feat in Seoul on May 31st, defeating France (1-0), the reigning world champions. This victory boosted the Lions, who went on to have a memorable run.
In 2018, with the emergence of the generation of Sadio Mané, Gana Guèye and company, the Lions secured three points in their first World Cup match. After a hard-fought game, they defeated Robert Lewandowski and his teammates (1-2).
However, at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, Senegal suffered a defeat in their opening match. Kalidou Koulibaly and his teammates were outclassed (0-2) by an impressive Dutch team on November 21st. But the Lions managed to finish second in their group, defeating Qatar (3-1) and Ecuador (2-1).
