Les propos surprenants de Samir Sobha (CAF) sur la finale : "Nous implorons le Maroc de nous pardonner parce que…"
A month after Senegal's victory in Rabat, the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations final continues to generate discussion. Sobha, a CAF executive member and also president of the Mauritius Football Association, spoke to the Guardian to beg forgiveness from the Moroccans.
"I would like to implore the Moroccan Football Federation to forgive us for the injustice done to them. The rules were not respected as they should have been during this match… They were wronged," said Samir Sobha.
"According to the member of the Confederation of African Football, the Senegalese players who left the pitch to protest the refereeing should all have received a yellow card. 'It is clear that after the Senegalese team left the field, all the players should have been given a yellow card. I am not saying that the trophy should not have been awarded to the Senegalese team. What's done is done. We cannot change it…' he added to the English media outlet."
"But we must put our egos aside and recognize that an injustice has been committed against the Moroccan national team. After examining the competition regulations, I am convinced that my position is correct," the Mauritian official concluded.
However, several experts and former referees have determined that the Congolese referee, Jean-Jacques Ndala, made two major errors during the final. Both errors benefited Morocco. First, he should have allowed play to continue after the disallowed goal for Senegal. Second, the penalty awarded to Brahim Diaz should not have been given, as he hadn't made a clear mistake by not calling the foul in the initial play. Regarding these two blatant errors against Morocco, in addition to those observed in the host country's other matches, the CAF remains conspicuously silent. All public statements focus solely on the Senegalese players' departure from the pitch during the final, never on the underlying cause.
