Ligue 1: Habib Beye a "la passion de continuer" sur le banc de Rennes
"I have the passion to continue and to believe that in these moments, you have to hang on," said coach Habib Beye, weakened by Rennes' latest defeat in Lens (3-1) on Saturday during the 21st day of Ligue 1.
Despite Esteban Lepaul opening the scoring (8th minute), the Breton club was overturned by the Blood and Gold, suffering their fourth consecutive defeat after those against Lorient (2-0), Monaco (4-0) and Marseille (3-0).
Despite the storm raging over Stade Rennais, Habib Beye calls for "not giving up": "That's precisely where we need to show character," he insisted. "(...) We need to be strong. So we tried to show that tonight in a difficult situation."
The former Senegalese international cites his club's impressive run last season as a reason for hope to reverse the trend and secure European qualification: "When I arrived here, on matchday 20, Rennes had 17 points (compared to 41 at the end of the season, editor's note)."
After the defeat in Lens, the Bretons are sixth (31 points) within reach of Strasbourg (7th, 30 pts) and Toulouse (8th, 30 pts), among others.
When asked about a lack of support from his players, the Rennes coach replied: "A coach doesn't ask himself if his players are with him. The coach, today, is responsible for the performance of his team through the choice of players (...) and respect for the institution."
This is how Habib Beye justified leaving out international goalkeeper Brice Samba for the trip to the Bollaert stadium, without saying more.
