Ligue 1 sénégalaise - Guédiawaye FC : Joseph Wagane Senghor croit au maintien
After a difficult period, Guédiawaye FC seems to have regained hope in its fight to avoid relegation from the Senegalese Ligue 1. Bottom of the table before their trip to Saint-Louis, the club from the Dakar suburbs pulled off a major upset, defeating Linguère of Saint-Louis 3-1 in a match counting towards the 18th round of fixtures.
Having recently taken over as manager to replace the resigning Aliou Mbaye, new coach Joseph Wagane Senghor is showing great confidence in the club's chances of remaining in the top tier of Senegalese football.
According to the coach, this victory is primarily a response to the frustration that arose during the previous match against US Gorée. "The draw conceded in the final minutes against Gorée really stuck in our craw. We had dominated, but we conceded the equalizer," he explained.
This poor performance prompted the staff to analyze the weekend's opponent in depth in order to best prepare for this crucial away game.
Aware of the club's precarious situation, Joseph Wagane Senghor makes no secret of the urgency of securing points. "We are in a very uncomfortable position. The championship is progressing, and there are only twelve matchdays left. We are now acting like accountants: every point counts. In Saint-Louis, we didn't come to limit the damage, but to take the three points to get out of the relegation zone," he insisted.
The experienced coach also emphasized the psychological work done with his squad, which includes many young players. "The kids have a lot of talent. A lot happened during the first half of the season, but that's in the past. We mainly worked on building confidence and providing some tactical guidance. Mentally, the players are now more relaxed," he explained.
For him, the key to recovery also lies in unity around the club. "I knew the situation before accepting this challenge. I am convinced that staying up is possible, or even better. If all the stakeholders – the president, the management, and the supporters – rally around the team, we can get out of this difficult period and aim higher," concluded Joseph Wagane Senghor.
With twelve matchdays still to play, Guédiawaye FC hopes to confirm this return to form and begin a decisive comeback in the second half of the season.
