Maroc : Walid Regragui met son avenir en suspens et propose sa démission à la tête des Lions de l'Atlas
It's a shockwave that's hitting Moroccan football, just four months before the 2026 World Cup. According to Foot Mercato, the national coach, Walid Regragui, has offered his resignation, almost three weeks after the AFCON-2025 final lost against Senegal (0-1, after extra time).
Having taken the helm of the Atlas Lions with the ambition of establishing a long-term presence, the 50-year-old coach seemed to have regained some of the confidence lost after the resounding failure of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, which ended with a premature elimination in the round of 16. The run to the final in the last Africa Cup of Nations had revived his standing with the public and pundits.
Despite this renewed legitimacy, Walid Regragui would like to end his mission before its initial deadline, scheduled after the 2026 World Cup. A strong decision, which now places the Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF) in front of a difficult choice.
The FRMF may decide to refuse this resignation and keep Regragui in his position, especially since the locker room would remain largely in favor of him.
Conversely, accepting his departure would open up an urgent task: the appointment of a new coach within a particularly tight timeframe, as a crucial world event approaches.
In any case, the immediate future of the Atlas Lions looks uncertain, as preparations for the World Cup enter a decisive phase.
