Match amical Espagne / Égypte : polémique après des chants anti-musulmans dans les tribunes
The friendly match between the Spanish and Egyptian national football teams (0-0), played on Tuesday at the RCDE Stadium, was marred by incidents in the stands, sparking outrage in Spain.
During the first half, a group of Spanish supporters repeatedly chanted an Islamophobic song. While jumping in time with the music, some chanted a slogan targeting Muslims, causing immediate discomfort among the observers and media present.
These actions were quickly denounced by several voices in the Spanish media. The radio program Tiempo de Juego on COPE Radio, in particular, described the chants as "horrible" and "unacceptable," emphasizing the seriousness of such behavior in a sports venue.
Despite repeated chants, the referee did not activate the protocol against discriminatory behavior. At halftime, however, a public service announcement was shown on the stadium screens, reminding everyone that Spanish law prohibits all violent, racist, or xenophobic displays in sports. The stadium announcer also addressed the crowd, calling for respect, a message that was met with boos from some spectators.
On the pitch, several figures spoke out after the match. FC Barcelona midfielder Pedri strongly condemned the behavior, as did national team coach Luis de la Fuente. Both emphasized the need to collectively combat all forms of discrimination in football.
These incidents have once again reignited the debate on the responsibility of sports authorities and organizers in the face of excesses in stadiums, and on the strict application of anti-discrimination protocols.
