Mexique : un supporter «en état d'ivresse» décède avant un match test pour le Mondial de football

A fan died on Saturday after falling during the friendly match between Mexico and Portugal in Mexico City. The tragedy occurred in the recently renovated stadium, chosen to host several matches of this summer's FIFA World Cup.

A football fan died Saturday after a fall inside the Estadio Banorte stadium in Mexico City. The information was confirmed by local security authorities in a statement released on X.

The incident occurred on the sidelines of the friendly match between Mexico and Portugal, which ended in a goalless draw (0-0).

According to authorities, "a drunken fan attempted to jump from the second to the first level by jumping over the outside, which caused him to fall to the ground floor, so he was taken care of by medical staff, but unfortunately he lost his life."

A STRATEGIC STADIUM FOR THE WORLD CUP

This match served as a full-scale test for the stadium, which had recently reopened after several years of renovation in preparation for the next World Cup.

The stadium is scheduled to host five matches of the tournament, including the opening match between Mexico and South Africa on June 11. This match will allow the stadium to become the first in history to host three opening matches of a World Cup, after 1970 and 1986.

AN INCIDENT THAT WAS HIRED ON MY WAY

The tragedy was not widely reported during the match, which proceeded without interruption. Several security personnel on site appeared to have little information about the circumstances of the accident.

Many spectators in the stands were also unaware that such an event had just occurred.

The Athletic reported that it had sought reactions from FIFA and the Mexican federation, but received no immediate response.
