The director of the Egyptian national team, Ibrahim Hassan, has warned Mohamed Salah against a move to Major League Soccer (MLS) after he leaves Liverpool at the end of the season, believing it could cause the striker to fade into obscurity.

At 33, Salah has yet to decide on the next step in his career after ending a successful nine-year spell at Liverpool, where he won two Premier League titles and the Champions League. MLS Commissioner Don Garber has stated that he would love to see Salah in the league, although it is not certain that any MLS team will attempt to sign him.

“Personally, I’d prefer he stay in Europe,” Ibrahim Hassan, director of the Egyptian national team, told On Sports. “I’ve heard about offers from Paris Saint-Germain, Bayern Munich, and clubs in the Italian league. A move to Major League Soccer? He’d be far too far from the spotlight. Salah wouldn’t be remembered any more than I remember (Lionel) Messi today; I don’t even try to watch him.” After Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain, the Argentine captain joined Inter Miami in 2023, a few months after winning the World Cup, and has since become the Florida club’s all-time leading scorer.

"A transfer to the Saudi league would be a good option," said Ibrahim Hassan, director of the Egyptian national team.

Hassan stated that the Saudi Pro League would be a suitable option if Salah chose not to remain in Europe. "If he doesn't receive offers from Europe, then a move to the Saudi league would be a good option, especially with big names like Cristiano (Ronaldo)," added Hassan, twin brother of Egyptian coach Hossam Hassan.

Salah is currently unavailable due to injury and will not participate in Egypt's training camp ahead of the World Cup in North America.

Egypt will face Spain in a friendly match in Barcelona on Tuesday, after their 4-0 victory over Saudi Arabia in Jeddah on Friday. The seven-time African champions are in Group G with Belgium, New Zealand, and Iran at the World Cup, which will take place from June 11 to July 19.
