Mondial 2026 : Bonne nouvelle pour les supporters sénégalais
Faced with public outcry, the US administration announced a relaxation of the rules targeting foreigners holding a ticket to attend a 2026 World Cup match. Senegalese, Algerian and Tunisian supporters, initially targeted by drastic measures, will thus see their travel conditions simplified.
The United States announced Wednesday a relaxation of its bank bond system for tourist visa applications. Under a restrictive immigration policy, US authorities required nationals of 50 developing countries to post a bond of between $5,000 and $15,000 (approximately 3 million to 9 million CFA francs) to obtain a visa. This sum, considered exorbitant, was supposed to be refunded upon the traveler's return to their country of origin.
The State Department indicated that this security deposit no longer applies to members of participating teams, nor to fans of competing countries who already have tickets and are registered with the FIFA Pass. This priority system was implemented to facilitate obtaining visas for the event. "We remain committed to strengthening U.S. national security priorities while facilitating legitimate travel for the upcoming World Cup," said Mora Namdar, Assistant Secretary of State for Consular Affairs.
Five countries that qualified for the World Cup were on the red list requiring these deposits: Senegal, Ivory Coast, Cape Verde, Algeria, and Tunisia. For these nations, a $15,000 deposit (9 million CFA francs) represents on average three years of income, making travel virtually impossible for the majority of fans. While this easing of restrictions is a breath of fresh air for the "Lions" supporters, the situation remains complex for other nations like Haiti and Iran, which face near-total entry bans to the United States.
