Mondial 2026 : le puissant message de Bouna Sarr à Pape Thiaw
Bouna Sarr has been absent from the Lions' squads since their victory at the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations. Due to serious health problems, his club situation has prevented him from turning things around. His transfer to Bayern Munich was a flop. Now at FC Metz, where he came through the youth ranks, the 34-year-old right-back is trying to get back on track, hoping to return to the national team for the 2026 World Cup. "I would like to experience more moments with the national team," the former Marseille player confessed in an interview published this Thursday in L'Observateur.
Bouna Sarr is convinced he is "capable of contributing to the national team." His competitive advantages? "I would say my experience with the national team, which has been positive," he declares. "Through my experience, I can also bring something to the team. And today, whether it's my footballing abilities, athletically or physically, I feel good at all levels. I feel capable of participating in a competition like this and contributing my qualities to the team."
Bouna Sarr is all the more convinced of his usefulness to the national team because he's close to most of the senior players. "I talk a lot with former teammates like Kalidou Koulibaly, with whom I've always had strong ties and with whom I trained at FC Metz. Players like Sadio [Mané], with whom I trained, or Édouard Mendy, who's been a friend since our time at Marseille. It's true that I'm speaking from experience, but we can also talk about team dynamics. I know a lot of the players on this team."
The striker-turned-defender insisted: "There are many criteria to meet; it may not be the most important, but it is a criterion that could play a role and bring certainty to the selection process."
