Mondial-2026: l'Iran fustige un "traitement discriminatoire" des Etats-Unis après des refus de visas
Iran on Saturday denounced what it considers to be "discriminatory treatment" after the United States refused to issue visas for the World Cup to several members of the national team's coaching staff.
"Why don't you say that visas have been refused to a large part of the management and leadership staff, technical advisors and other people who are an integral part of the national team?", wrote the Iranian embassy in Turkey on X, describing these refusals as "the highest level of intentional discriminatory treatment" against it.
She was responding to a statement by the US ambassador to Turkey, Tom Barrack, who announced that the Iranian team had obtained their visas for the United States, with the team scheduled to play its first match in the competition on June 15 in Los Angeles against New Zealand.
According to several Iranian media outlets, including the sports website Varzesh3, the president of the Iranian federation, Mehdi Taj, has not obtained a visa.
The Iranian team is currently in Turkey. They are scheduled to leave for Spain on Saturday before flying to Mexico, where their base camp is located. Team Melli is expected to arrive there on Sunday.
Iran was one of the first countries to qualify for the World Cup, but its participation was called into question after the launch of Israeli-American strikes on the country on February 28.
Uncertainties about obtaining visas forced the team to move its base camp from Tucson, Arizona to Tijuana, Mexico.
A few hours after confirming the granting of visas to Iranian footballers, the United States announced new strikes against Iran, despite the ceasefire theoretically in effect since April 8.
