Brazilian star Neymar is suffering from a calf muscle injury and is not expected to recover for "two or three weeks", the Seleção doctor announced on Thursday, a delay that jeopardizes his chances of playing in his team's first match at the 2026 World Cup.
An MRI scan has "identified a second-degree muscle injury (...), hopefully he can be fit within two or three weeks. He is undergoing intensive treatment and will be reassessed daily," said doctor Rodrigo Lasmar at a press conference.
Brazil, seeking their sixth world title, will begin their campaign on June 13 against Morocco. While awaiting confirmation of his fitness in time for that match, 34-year-old Neymar will miss the final two friendly preparation games: against Panama on Sunday at the Maracana Stadium in Rio de Janeiro, and against Egypt on June 6 in Cleveland.
