The agreement to expand the number of teams to 64 for the 2030 World Cup was discussed at a meeting held at FIFA headquarters on Tuesday. Gianni Infantino, president of the world football body, met with South American delegations at FIFA's office in Trump Tower in New York to discuss the idea of further expansion.

According to "The Athletic," Infantino met with the heads of state of Paraguay, Santiago Pena, and Uruguay, Yamandu Orsi, to finalize the proposal they, along with Argentina, had formally submitted in March 2025. The two parties are said to be moving closer to an agreement.

To celebrate the competition's centenary, FIFA decided to hold three matches in South America, the venue for the first edition. The competition will then move on to Spain, Portugal, and Morocco. This will be the first time the competition will be held on three different continents simultaneously.

On his social media, Alejandro Dominguez, president of the South American Football Confederation, posted a short video of the meeting, which notably justifies the reason for a possible extension. "This event cannot be held like an ordinary World Cup. It's an opportunity that only comes around once every hundred years," he said.

A point of view shared by Infantino, who seems to confirm that FIFA is on the same wavelength: "Together, we seek to achieve something that the world will not forget, because people deserve it."

Here is the evolution of the number of participants in the World Cup since 1930

- 1930: 13 teams

- From 1934 to 1978: 16 teams

- From 1982 to 1994: 24 teams

- From 1998 to 2022: 32 teams

- 2026: 48 teams
