NBA Playoffs: Mouhamed Guèye, la fierté du Sénégal au cœur du Madison Square Garden

In the sweltering atmosphere of Madison Square Garden, as the Knicks edged out the Atlanta Hawks (113-102) in Game 1 of the first round of the NBA playoffs, a young Lion of Teranga was making his debut. For Mouhamed Guèye, his playoff debut was not just a personal milestone, but an opportunity to proudly display his Senegalese identity on the world's biggest stage.

Stepping onto the court at Madison Square Garden in the playoffs is a test of character, and Guèye approached it with disconcerting composure. Despite the stakes, he managed to keep a cool head: "It's true that the Garden is the Mecca of basketball. But in the end, it's basketball. Sometimes you don't even hear the noise, you're focused," he told us after the game. This ability to ignore the pressure allowed the 23-year-old to bring valuable energy off the bench, particularly on the boards, against the physicality of the New Yorkers.

For Guèye, this NBA adventure is inseparable from his roots. Aware of the expectations in Dakar, he embraces his role as an ambassador with great humility: “It’s my chance to represent an entire country. I’m not going to take it for granted. I’m going to do everything I can to represent Senegal well.” This national pride is coupled with a strong connection to the Hawks’ “African connection.” Surrounded by Jonathan Kuminga, Christian Koloko, Gabe Vincent, and Onyeka Okongwu, he contributes to the affirmation of a cultural identity within the league. “We try to bring our culture here, and people like it. It’s cool,” he says with a smile, even mentioning his brotherly relationship with Kuminga. “He says I’m like a son to him.”

Even caught up in the adrenaline of the postseason, Guèye hasn't forgotten the development of basketball on the continent. As the Sahara Conference of the Basketball Africa League (BAL) prepares to begin in Senegal, he's keeping a close eye on ASC Ville de Dakar: "It's good for basketball, for Senegal, and for Africa. God willing, I hope they win this year."
