At a press conference this Thursday, the Minister of Sports, Khady Diène Gaye, took a firm stance in his favor and opened the door to a review of his contract.
Speaking to the press, Khady Diène Gaye left no doubt about the Senegalese government's position regarding the sanction imposed on Pape Thiaw by the Confederation of African Football. The Minister of Sports expressed her deep regret at this decision and assured everyone that Senegal would not abandon its national team coach.
After speaking with the president of the Senegalese Football Federation (FSF), Abdoulaye Fall, the head of Senegalese sport reaffirmed the patriotic character and total commitment of the national coach. "Pape Thiaw is a Senegalese and a patriot. He has ardently defended the national colors. He is our coach and we are all behind him," she declared, emphasizing the solidarity of the sports and state authorities.
Khady Diène Gaye also reassured everyone about the steps being taken to defend the coach's interests, both at the FSF level and at the ministry level. "We will do everything in our power to support him. There is no question of abandoning him," she insisted.
Beyond the sanction, the minister announced good news for Pape Thiaw: a possible salary increase. According to her, the results speak for themselves for the coach, who not only qualified Senegal for the World Cup but also won the Africa Cup of Nations.
"Yes, a pay raise is possible. He has achieved the set objectives. You don't change a winning team," she stated, before mentioning the need to ensure the coach's work is sustainable over time.
The minister finally clarified that Pape Thiaw's initial contract included a clear clause that went beyond simply reaching the Africa Cup of Nations final, aiming for continental glory. Looking even more ambitiously, Khady Diène Gaye reiterated Senegal's desire to dream bigger: to become the first African nation to win a World Cup.
"To achieve this goal, we need to put our coach in optimal conditions, offer him the necessary serenity, without financial or daily worries," she concluded.
A strong message, which confirms the total confidence of the Senegalese authorities in the former international who led the Lions to the top of African football.
