As host of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, Morocco's image took a serious hit during the final, following refereeing controversies and the subsequent towel incident, which garnered international attention. But what are the consequences for Morocco with FIFA?
According to The Athletic, FIFA president Gianni Infantino has decided not to take any action against Morocco. He does not believe that the chaos surrounding the towel incident during the final, won by Senegal, will impact the African nation's chances of hosting the 2030 World Cup. The FIFA boss, however, believes that the organization of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations was outstanding and that Morocco was a magnificent host.
A disguised response to the Spanish, who had launched a campaign to push the world football governing body to withdraw Morocco from co-hosting the 2030 World Cup. Several Spaniards, journalists and influencers, had railed against the towel affair, but also the numerous refereeing controversies in favor of Morocco throughout the competition.
It's also worth remembering that within Spanish circles, Morocco's growing ambition to host the 2030 World Cup final, seemingly at the expense of Spain, was met with disapproval. The president of the Spanish Football Federation, Rafael Louzan, even spoke out a few days after the Africa Cup of Nations final, confirming that Spain would host the 2030 World Cup final. In response to this statement, several Moroccan media outlets published images of the poor condition of some Spanish stadiums, notably the water leak at Camp Nou (FC Barcelona's stadium) during the match against Oviedo a few days prior, claiming the right to host the 2030 final.
FIFA has not yet reacted to Louzan's statement regarding this final contested between the two countries, although everything suggests that the last match of the 2030 World Cup will not escape Spain.
