Qualifications pour la Coupe du monde de basket féminin : les Lionnes s’inclinent encore mais entretiennent l’espoir
The Senegalese women's national team suffered their third defeat in the FIBA Women's Basketball World Cup qualifying tournament. After losses to the United States and Spain, the Lionesses were beaten by the host nation, Puerto Rico (56-47). Despite this latest setback, the Senegalese team still retains a slim chance of qualifying from Group A, where only one spot remains.
The game got off to a bad start for the Senegalese players. From the first quarter, the Lionesses struggled to find their offensive rhythm. With only three baskets scored for a total of five points, notably by Nene Awa Ndiaye and Khadija Faye, Senegal was particularly clumsy. Turnovers also proved costly, allowing Puerto Rico to quickly take the lead (17-5).
Stung by their pride, the Lionesses responded in the second quarter. Led by a very solid Khadija Faye in the paint, they went on an impressive 15-0 run. Senegal dominated this period (20-8) and got back into the game. But Puerto Rico, more accurate from long range, managed to maintain their lead going into halftime (26-22).
After the break, the Senegalese team struggled again. Between turnovers and defensive lapses, they conceded a 7-0 run that gave the home team some breathing room. Khadija Faye, who delivered a remarkable performance (14 points and 10 rebounds), tried to keep her team in the game. However, Puerto Rico won the third quarter again (16-10) to extend their lead to ten points (42-32).
In the final quarter, Yacine Diop and her teammates tried to get back into the game and managed to close the gap, keeping alive their hopes of a comeback. But the Puerto Rican team's determination ultimately proved decisive. Senegal lost by nine points (56-47).
With their backs against the wall, the Lionesses must win on Tuesday against Italy to have any hope of securing their qualification for the next World Cup.
