Recours au TAS : Ce qui pourrait jouer en faveur du Sénégal (Jeune Afrique)
Senegal has officially filed its appeal with the Court of Arbitration for Sport. The Senegalese Football Federation (FSF) hopes to reclaim its 2025 African Cup of Nations title, which was revoked by CAF and awarded to Morocco by default.
The FSF's pool of lawyers intends to dismantle the arguments of the CAF appeals jury, which relied on articles 82 and 84 of the institution that governs African football to sanction Senegal forfeiting the match and then award the victory to Morocco by default.
As reported by Jeune Afrique, one point is working in Senegal's favor: the jurisprudence of the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), which is far more complex than that of the Confederation of African Football (CAF). Indeed, the CAS relies on several complementary principles. This could undermine the CAF's arguments and reinstate Senegal as the winner of the Africa Cup of Nations.
One of the additional principles that could sway the CAS decision is Law 5 of the International Football Association Board (IFAB), which states that "the referee's decisions on matters relating to the game are final, including the awarding of a goal and the result of the match." According to the pan-African media outlet, the FSF's legal team is also emphasizing the distinction between a temporary interruption of play and a refusal to resume the match that is sufficiently prolonged to be considered an "abandonment."
