Recours du Sénégal contre la CAF : Les assurances du Directeur Général du Tribunal arbitral du Sport (TAS)
The affair has generated a great deal of discussion and controversy. The Confederation of African Football's (CAF) decision to strip Senegal of its title (AFCON 2025) was met with a wave of outrage. This Wednesday, the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) announced that it had received the appeal filed by the Senegalese Football Federation (FSF). Matthieu Reeb, the CAS Director General, even commented on the matter.
"The CAS is perfectly equipped to resolve this type of dispute, with the help of specialized and independent arbitrators. We are aware that the teams and fans want to know the final decision as soon as possible and we will ensure that the arbitration procedure can be carried out as quickly as possible, while respecting the right of all parties to a fair trial," he assured in a CAS press release.
Indeed, the world sport's arbitration body acknowledged receipt on Wednesday of the appeal filed by the Senegalese Football Federation (FSF) against the Confederation of African Football (CAF) and the Royal Moroccan Football Federation. The appeal concerns the CAF's decision of March 17, 2026, declaring that the Senegalese national team lost the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations final by forfeit and awarding the victory to the Moroccan national team with a score of 3-0.
According to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), the Senegalese side is requesting that "the CAF's decision be overturned and the FSF be declared the winner of the AFCON." The FSF is also requesting "the immediate suspension of the deadline for filing its appeal brief until the full reasons for the CAF's decision are notified," the world sports arbitration body added in a statement.
The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) has announced that an arbitration panel will be appointed to rule on the case, after which a procedural timetable will be established. It specifies that an appellant has twenty days to file a statement of appeal containing its legal arguments, after which the respondents have another twenty days to reply.
