Sénégal-Gambie : Pape Thiaw explique la sortie de Nobel Mendy et prévient ses cadres
In his first-ever start for the Senegalese national team, young Nobel Mendy had to leave the field prematurely due to a minor knock before halftime. In the post-match press conference, coach Pape Thiaw explained the reasons for this decision, emphasizing the importance of caution above all else.
“I took the initiative to take him off. When he took the knock, I saw he was limping a little. I don't like to push a player when he's injured. When I was a player, it cost me dearly,” the Senegalese coach explained frankly. Despite this premature exit, the coach was keen to highlight the defender's encouraging performance: “He showed some good things. He's doing well now. I hope he'll be back with his club this weekend.”
"There are no regular starters on my team."
Beyond Mendy's individual case, Pape Thiaw took the opportunity to reiterate his philosophy on squad management in the lead-up to the World Cup. The message is clear: no one is untouchable in the Lions of Teranga.
“There are no guaranteed starters in my team,” he insisted, emphasizing the importance of healthy competition among all members of the squad. This performance requirement applies to all areas of the pitch, including the backup goalkeeper position, where the hierarchy remains open. For the coach, only form and commitment will dictate the final selections.
