Sénégal - Norvège (2-3) : Les tops et les flops
The Lions have fallen again. After their defeat against France (3-1) in the first match, Senegal suffered another loss, this time against Norway (3-2). A disappointing result that leaves the reigning African champions on the brink of elimination. Here are the highs and lows.
The tops
Krépin Diatta
The "soldier" was there once again. Impeccable defensively, he stifled the usually very lively Antonio Nusa before feeling the effects of Schjelderup's introduction. Despite the Lions' collective collapse, he was one of the few to stand out.
Ismaila Sarr
Still struggling on the wing in the first half, he found his footing after being repositioned in the center. In the last 45 minutes, he scored twice to keep Senegal in the game, and even came close to scoring a hat-trick and equalizing with a header that went just wide of the crossbar.
The flops
Pape Thiaw
His decision to field the same starting eleven was clearly a mistake. He ignored the shortcomings observed against France, particularly in terms of physical conditioning. But his biggest error was his passivity on the bench. While Koulibaly faltered, making numerous mistakes in the first half, Thiaw lacked the foresight to substitute him, leaving him on until the 71st minute, during which time Senegal conceded two more goals, both resulting from errors by the captain. His substitutions, as well as their timing, are highly questionable.
Offensively, Senegal's collective failure also left its mark. The coach couldn't find the right combinations to get the best out of his attacking stars. No game plan, no passing patterns... Senegal seemed to be adrift, without a true captain at the helm.
Kalidou Koulibaly
A disaster! The captain certainly played the worst match of his entire international career. Already sloppy with his passing in the first half, and with poor positioning on Martin Odegaard's missed opportunity, Koulibaly was completely thrown off his game with his misplaced clearance at the end of the first half, which gifted Norway the opening goal. Not helped by Pape Thiaw, who didn't substitute him at halftime, the defender continued to sink. A disastrous tackle on Norway's second goal when he could have simply recovered the ball by staying on his feet, then another poor clearance that led to the Vikings' third goal – Koulibaly endured a true nightmare.
El Hadji Malick Diouf
The Lions' left-back also had a very difficult match. Targeted by Norway's long balls due to his physical imbalance against Sorloth, he was completely outmuscled by the Atletico Madrid striker in every duel. Offensively, he missed several of his crosses.
